This guy just sued the school system, AND IT’S ABOUT TIME!

Updated: Oct 25, 2019

As someone who has spent the last few years teaching Maths as a core subject in the education system, even I know that the school system needs to change.

And I’m not the only one. This man created a powerful video explaining exactly why the system needs to change. And I could not agree more.

Everybody is a genius. But if you judge a fish by its ability to climb a tree, it will live its whole life believing that it is stupid. – Albert Einstein

While I strongly believe that Maths is a crucial component of education, I do not believe that it should be considered as more important as many of the other subjects taught in school. But that’s not even the biggest problem.

The biggest problem is there are so many things that SHOULD be taught in school that simply aren’t.

Many students come out of the schooling system academically brilliant, but not at all ready for the world as it stands today.

The world has progressed, and now we need people who think creatively, innovatively, critically, independently, with the ability to connect – Prince Ea

Academics alone aren’t the way forward. Now we have Google in our pockets, endless libraries at our fingertips, and more resources and opportunities than we could possibly imagine.

What we really need now are those people who will take us far above and beyond what we see today. It’s no longer about who is the smartest, it’s about who is willing to create, innovate, and challenge the status quo.

School doesn’t make success anymore

Steve Jobs: Co founder of Apple

People like Steve Jobs (co-founder of Apple) or Richard Branson (founder of Virgin Airlines and plenty of other Virgin brands) are examples of that. Neither of them finished college. Their stories are frequently told with a combination of reverence and disbelief. That they somehow did something extraordinary that isn’t possible for us mere mortals.

That’s half true.

They did something extraordinary.

What they did was extraordinary because it was not what we consider ordinary. But to say that it is out of our reach is simply wrong.

They had ideas that could change the world, and then they connected with people much smarter than themselves to make those ideas a reality.

Can you name the guy who wrote the software for the first Apple computer?

Most people can’t. His name is Steve Wozniak. A brilliant, remarkable man who brought the Apple computer to life. Steve Jobs worked with him to sell it. Together they brought something to this world that could not have been managed by either one of them alone.

These are the skills that need to be brought into our school system. Creativity, technology, and collaboration.

The secret isn’t being smart

Whether you take that as being good at Maths, English, Art,  Science, Technology, Music, or any other number of wonderful talents that you possess.

The secret is collaboration. The secret is working with other to produce something that no individual themself could bring to life.

And that is what schools need to be bringing into students’ lives.

What would you like to see in the school system?
